Honolulu Jobs Set To Rise and Rise

If your choice of Island rests purely on employment opportunities, then you should be looking through the jobs in Honolulu. The vast majority of employment is found on Oahu, by a large margin. The unemployment rate is lower here than the rest of Hawaii. It is projected, in fact, that Honolulu County will account for as much as 60% of the job growth in all of Hawaii during this decade (Hawaii Dept of Labor).

In addition, the opportunities for education & training are more numerous here, too. There are 4 UH community colleges on Oahu, all of which offer vocational training and certification programs as well many private training centers that cover almost every career possible. Nothing on the other Islands can match this.

It has the population, the development and remains the unquestioned economic center for the entire State.

Despite those advantages you still need to look ahead. We live in a world that changes very quickly and jobs can become obsolete, leaving you without a paycheck and little opportunity if you don't think ahead. So where will Honolulu jobs be expanding in the years ahead?

Where Job Growth Will be in Honolulu

Most people immediately think of one industry – Tourism. It is the dominant economic force on Oahu and is definitely where the jobs in Waikiki will be. However, the greatest gains will ultimately be going to healthcare & education jobs in Honolulu. Surprised?

You shouldn't be, because this mirrors a nationwide trend, especially in the case of healthcare. Spending on medical and care services is going to see a huge jump as people spend more and more on healthcare, particularly seniors.

Living longer, and more independently, than even recent generations has been a huge driver here. There is a demand growing and, with it, the need for those who can fill it. Nurses, caregivers, nursing assistants (CNAs) and others will have the most options for employment, hands down.

Honolulu education jobs will still come in the traditional places, such as public schools and post-secondary classrooms. However, there's an unusual projected big winner for new positions - self enrichment education teachers.

These are instructors in music, languages and other non-vocational or other classes that aren't part of a certification or degree program. Another breakout job is special education teacher. As more is understood about teaching students who need a different curriculum, schools have begun expanding their programs, opening the way for more teachers here.

Hospitality & tourism jobs in Honolulu will, of course, remain strong as well. Any survey of where employment will be found on Oahu for the future must always include them. These are exceptionally attractive for their entry-level jobs that do have a lot of potential for upward mobility.

Even if this isn't the top place for adding new jobs, there's no question that it is a prime one for openings on a consistent basis. The turnover can be high in this sector for various reasons so the help wanted signs are always out, ready for your application.

Where to Find Honolulu Job Openings Most
There's another important measurement besides jobs added and that's annual openings. That just means slots that are going to need to be filled due to turnover or growth. The winners there will be our services (think hospitality & tourism related) and sales positions. They may not dominate in pure growth, but there will be more help wanted ads out for these than any other area in Honolulu.

In general the outlook is good for Honolulu and all of Oahu for the coming years. Employment numbers will be on the rise for the coming year at, or above, the national average. No question it is where you should be if you want the greatest options and the most room to move upward.

Why wait to search for a new situation? Find jobs on Oahu now right here. Everything from tourism and hospitality jobs to those medical and education positions in Honolulu that are expanding more and more.
